A new car tire costs about $60 to $315 in the US, depending on size and type. That's the spread of prices we saw for four common sizes at Discount Tire and Tire Rack in October 2026. A set of four runs about $245 to $1,255 before fitting.
Fitting adds roughly $23 to $65 per tire at most shops. In the UK, fully fitted tyres for common sizes run about £50 to £200 each.
US tire prices by size
Size moves the price more than anything else. A compact car's 16-inch tire starts near $60. A pickup's all-terrain tire can pass $300.
Here are the lowest and highest prices we saw in four popular sizes. Prices are per tire, tire only.
Size | Type of car | Lowest we saw | Highest we saw | Set of four |
|---|---|---|---|---|
205/55R16 | Compact car, all-season | $61 (Sentury Touring) | $195.99 (Michelin CrossClimate2) | $244 to $784 |
225/65R17 | Small SUV, all-season | $81 (Mohave CUV) | $224.99 (Michelin CrossClimate2) | $324 to $900 |
245/40R18 | Sport sedan, UHP all-season | $175.51 (Bridgestone Potenza RE980AS+) | $283.99 (Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 ZP) | $702 to $1,136 |
265/70R17 | Pickup, all-terrain | about $102 (entry-level all-terrain) | $313.45 (Toyo Open Country A/T III, LT) | $408 to $1,254 |
These are the lowest and highest prices on the first page of results at each retailer, not the full range in each size. Tire Rack showed 10 of the 136 models it stocks in 205/55R16, so cheaper and dearer tires exist. Discount Tire says pricing may vary by store.
Discount Tire's own price guide gives similar ballparks. It puts all-season tires for 16- to 20-inch wheels at $100 to $250 each and winter tires in those sizes at $200 to $400. Performance tires in those sizes run $100 to $750, and up to $1,000 on bigger wheels.
To find your size, check the driver's door label. Our guide on how to read a tire size explains the code.
What makes one tire cost more than another
Four things set the price, roughly in this order:
- Size. Bigger rims and wider tires cost more. The same Michelin CrossClimate2 is $195.99 in 205/55R16 and $224.99 in 225/65R17 at Tire Rack.
- Type. All-terrain, winter and high-performance tires cost more than touring all-seasons in the same size.
- Brand. In 225/65R17, Discount Tire listed a Mohave CUV at $81 and a Michelin Defender 2 at $195.
- Run-flat or load rating. Run-flats typically cost 25% to 100% more to replace than regular tires (Kelley Blue Book). LT (light truck) versions of the same tire cost more again. A Falken WildPeak A/T4W in 265/70R17 was $237 as a standard-load tire and $301 as the load range E HD version at Tire Rack.
On a BMW with run-flats, the gap is real money. Our piece on run-flat vs regular tires compares one tire both ways.
Fitting, TPMS and disposal
The price on the tire isn't the price you pay. Most US shops add mounting, balancing and a few small fees per tire.
Extra | Typical US price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Mount and balance | $15 to $45 per tire | Jerry, standard passenger car |
Road-force balance | $10 to $25 extra per tire | Only if needed for a vibration (Jerry) |
Low-profile or run-flat handling | $5 to $15 extra per tire | |
Valve stems (no TPMS) | $3 to $8 each | |
TPMS service kit | $5 to $12 per wheel | Seals, cores and caps for the pressure sensor (Jerry) |
TPMS relearn | $0 to $30 total | Some cars relearn on their own (Jerry) |
New TPMS sensor | About $45 per tire at Costco, $100 to $300 at dealers | Costco figure is customer-reported (SlashGear) |
Disposal or shop fees | $3 to $8 per tire | |
California tire fee | $1.75 per new tire | State fee collected by the seller (CDTFA) |
TPMS is the tire pressure monitoring system. Many cars have a sensor inside each wheel, which is why the kit is priced per wheel. If a sensor needs replacing, that's the biggest extra on the list.
Warehouse clubs bundle the extras. Costco has no separate installation fee, and its price includes mounting, balancing, new valve stems and disposal. Sam's Club charges $20 per tire, or $10 for Plus members, with the same basics included (SlashGear). Both charge extra for new TPMS sensors.

The out-the-door bill for four tires
Here's a full bill for four 225/65R17 tires, the size on a lot of small SUVs. The low end uses the lowest tire price we saw and the lowest fees above. The high end uses the highest of each.
Line | Low end | High end |
|---|---|---|
4 tires | $324.00 (4 × $81) | $899.96 (4 × $224.99) |
Mount and balance | $60.00 (4 × $15) | $180.00 (4 × $45) |
TPMS service kits | $20.00 (4 × $5) | $48.00 (4 × $12) |
Disposal and shop fees | $12.00 (4 × $3) | $32.00 (4 × $8) |
Total | $416.00 | $1,159.96 |
Fees are about 22% of the total either way. In California, add $7.00 in state tire fees for four tires.
An alignment isn't part of the tire job, but shops often suggest one. Our wheel alignment cost guide covers when it's worth it.
Compare cost per mile, not just price
A cheaper tire isn't always cheaper to own. Divide the price of a set by the miles you expect from it. The treadwear warranty is a fair stand-in when you don't have better data.
Tire Rack sells the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 in 245/40R18 at $228.99 with a 45,000-mile warranty. The run-flat ZP version is $283.99 with a 30,000-mile warranty (Tire Rack). A set of the regular tire works out at $20.35 per 1,000 warranted miles. The run-flat set is $37.87.
Tire, 245/40R18 | Set of four | Treadwear warranty | Per 1,000 warranted miles |
|---|---|---|---|
Pilot Sport All Season 4 | $915.96 | 45,000 miles | $20.35 |
Pilot Sport All Season 4 ZP | $1,135.96 | 30,000 miles | $37.87 |
Warranties are often halved for the rear tires when the front and rear sizes differ. Tire Rack notes this on both tires above.
UK tyre prices
UK online prices usually include fitting. Blackcircles' price covers VAT, delivery, fitting, balancing, a new rubber valve and disposal of your old tyre. Kwik Fit's online price includes the same items (Kwik Fit).
Size | Cheapest fully fitted | Dearest fully fitted | Set of four |
|---|---|---|---|
205/55R16 | £49.99 (Royal Black Royal Eco) | £109.99 (Michelin CrossClimate 3) | £199.96 to £439.96 |
225/45R17 | £59.18 (Westlake ZuperEco Z-107) | £121.99 (Michelin Pilot Sport 5) | £236.72 to £487.96 |
235/55R18 | £83.65 (Wanli Rangetour Plus SU025) | £195.99 (Michelin Primacy 5) | £334.60 to £783.96 |
245/40R18 | £68.99 (Royal Black Royal Performance) | £184.99 (Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sport) | £275.96 to £739.96 |
Bumper's 2026 guide groups UK tyres into three bands per tyre:
Band | Price per tyre | Set of four |
|---|---|---|
Budget | £45 to £70 | £180 to £280 |
Mid-range | £75 to £120 | £300 to £480 |
Premium | £120 to £250+ | £500 to £1,000+ |
If you buy tyres online and take them to a garage, expect to pay for fitting. AUTODOC puts fitting and balancing at £20 to £35, and a TPMS valve service kit at around £6 per wheel at some big retailers (AUTODOC).
How to pay less
- Price the whole bill, not the tire. Ask for the out-the-door price for four, including fees.
- Compare the same tire at two or three shops. Use the exact model and size so the quotes match.
- Check the date code. A cheap tire that's already four years old has lost part of its life. See how old is too old.
- Look past the top brands. In 225/65R17, Discount Tire listed tires from $81 to $195.
- Get a written quote. Our guide to getting a car repair quote applies to tires too.
What to do today
- Read your tire size off the door label, including the load index and speed rating.
- Price two or three tires in that size at two retailers.
- Ask each shop for an out-the-door price for four, with mounting, balancing, TPMS kits and disposal included.
- Ask whether your TPMS sensors are original and how old they are, since a sensor replacement can add $45 to $300 per wheel.
- Check the date code on the tires before they're fitted.
