An MOT is a legal test. A service is maintenance. The MOT checks that your car is safe and clean enough for the road on the day of the test. The maximum fee for a car is £54.85 (GOV.UK). A service replaces worn consumables like oil and filters, and a full service at a UK chain costs about £120 to £250.
You must have a valid MOT. You don't have to service your car, but skipping it is how cars end up failing the MOT.
What an MOT is
The MOT is an annual inspection set by government. A car needs its first one by the third anniversary of its registration, then every year after that (GOV.UK). Drive without a valid MOT and the fine is up to £1,000. You also can't renew vehicle tax without one.
You can book it up to a month minus a day before it expires and keep the same renewal date. GOV.UK's example: an MOT expiring on 15 May can be done from 16 April.
The tester checks 21 areas, from brakes, tires and lights to seatbelts, the windscreen, the horn and the VIN. GOV.UK is clear about what's left out. The test doesn't cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.
The result is a pass or fail. Nothing gets replaced unless you approve a repair.
What a service is
A service is preventive maintenance. A mechanic changes the oil and filter, replaces other filters on a schedule, tops up fluids and inspects wear items. There's no legal requirement, but a stamped service history helps resale.
UK garages sell three levels. ClickMechanic describes them like this:
- Interim, about every six months: a 50-point check, new oil and oil filter, and fluid top-ups.
- Full, about every year: a 70-point check, everything in the interim, plus a new air filter.
- Major, about every two years: a 71-point check and everything in the full. It adds a cabin filter, spark plugs on petrol cars and a fuel filter on diesels.
Kwik Fit also sells a manufacturer service, which follows the carmaker's schedule for that interval. It quotes those individually.
What each costs
The MOT is the cheap one, because its price is capped. Services are priced by the market and vary with engine size, oil type and garage.

Average yearly servicing bill, franchised dealer | £361 | Which?, 2025 survey |
The Which? numbers come from a survey of 63,334 owners run between April and June 2025. Dealers came out about £100 dearer than local garages on average.
What you drive matters too. In the same survey, owners of petrol cars paid an average of £335 a year for servicing. Diesel owners paid £400, electric car owners £351 and plug-in hybrid owners £444, the highest of any fuel type. All four figures are for cars up to four years old.
One name is gone from the list. ATS Euromaster announced in 2026 it was winding down its UK operations, selling some workshops and closing the rest (AM Online). Its website now says all its UK service centers are closed.
For US readers, the same logic applies to a scheduled service. Our guide to how much a car service costs covers US prices, and 30k, 60k and 90k mile services explains the bigger intervals.
Why cars fail the MOT
Lights fail more MOTs than anything else. DVSA data for April 2025 to March 2026 shows 27.51% of cars, vans and small passenger vehicles failed their first test. Lamps, reflectors and electrical faults turned up in 10.44% of all tests.
Suspension came second at 8.90% of tests, then tires at 6.23% and brakes at 6.10%. After retests, the final failure rate dropped to 22.30%. The year before, the initial rate was 28.08%.
Many of these are things a service would catch. Bulbs, wiper blades, tire tread and brake wear are all on a service checklist. Book the service first and fewer surprises reach the tester.
Should you book them together?
Usually, yes. It's one trip, and most chains discount the pair. Halfords says you can save up to £24.99 booking an MOT and service together. Kwik Fit's bundles start from £221.95.
There's a catch to watch. A garage doing both has a reason to find work. Get the MOT result in writing before approving extra repairs, and compare quotes if the bill climbs. Our guide on how to get a car repair quote shows what to ask for.
Kwik Fit says you may get a free retest after a fail. That only applies when the faults are quick fixes that can be done without the car leaving the garage.
What to do this month
- Check your MOT expiry date with the GOV.UK MOT history service.
- Walk round the car: every bulb, tire tread, wipers and washer fluid. That covers the top failure areas.
- Book the MOT inside the one-month-minus-a-day window so you keep the same renewal date.
- Decide on the service level. Interim if you do high miles, full once a year, major every other year or when the handbook says.
- Ask for an MOT and service bundle price, and get any repair quote in writing before you approve it.
Common questions
Does a service include an MOT?
No. They're separate jobs, often sold as a bundle. A service won't give you an MOT certificate, and an MOT won't change your oil.
Can a garage charge more than £54.85 for an MOT?
Not for a standard car. GOV.UK sets £54.85 as the maximum for class 4 vehicles. Many garages charge less, and Kwik Fit starts at £52.
Is it illegal not to service my car?
No. Only the MOT is a legal requirement. Skipping services can affect a warranty or resale value, so check your handbook and warranty terms.
What fails most MOTs?
Lights. DVSA data shows lamp, reflector and electrical faults in 10.44% of tests in the year to March 2026, ahead of suspension, tires and brakes.
