30k, 60k and 90k mile service: what's included and what it costs

Short answer

A 30k, 60k or 90k mile service is a bigger scheduled visit: oil, tire rotation, both air filters and inspections, plus plugs, fluids or belts on some cars. Toyota dealer menus charge about $210 to $400 for a four-cylinder, while RepairPal estimates $504 to $832 depending on the interval. A timing belt, if your engine has one, adds roughly $900 to $1,300.

A 30,000-mile service on most cars is an oil change, a tire rotation, new engine and cabin air filters, and a set of inspections. Toyota dealer menus price it at about $210 to $400 for a four-cylinder car. RepairPal's estimates run higher, from $504 to $651 at 30k and up to $832 at 60k.

The 60k and 90k visits repeat the 30k items and add belts, plugs or fluids on some cars. The big wildcard is a timing belt. If your engine has one, it's often due between 60,000 and 105,000 miles.

What's included at each interval

There's no universal 30/60/90 checklist. Every carmaker sets its own, and the owner's manual is the only list that counts.

The 30k list repeats; the 60k and 90k visits add belts, plugs and fluids on some cars

30,000 miles. Toyota's manual calls for an oil and filter change, a tire rotation and new cabin and engine air filters (Torque News). The tech also inspects the brakes, steering, drive shafts and fluid levels. Ford's 30k list is similar: a new engine air filter, rotation, and checks on hoses, exhaust, brakes and steering linkage (Kelley Blue Book).

60,000 miles. On a 2025 Camry, Toyota adds a drive belt inspection and a valve clearance check, according to a Toyota dealer's posted schedule. Subaru goes much further. Mike Shaw Subaru's 60k service includes new spark plugs, coolant, brake fluid and front and rear differential fluid.

90,000 miles. Expect the 30k items again plus a drive belt inspection. Underhood Service notes drive belts are commonly replaced at 90k on four-cylinder engines.

Hondas are different. Honda uses the Maintenance Minder, which calls up service by code rather than fixed miles (Kelley Blue Book). On a 2010 Pilot, code 2 covers the air filters. Code 4 means new spark plugs and a timing belt, plus a water pump inspection.

Some big jobs come later than people think. On the 2025 Camry, coolant isn't due until 100,000 miles and spark plugs until 120,000.

What it costs: dealer menus vs RepairPal

Dealer menus are often cheaper than you'd expect. Toyota of Glendale sells one "major service" for the 30k, 60k and 90k visits on four-cylinder cars. It costs $209.95 with conventional oil or $259.95 with synthetic, against regular prices of $316.95 and $397.45. Tustin Toyota's 30k special is $264.95, down from $397.45.

RepairPal's estimates, updated September 2026, are higher: $504 to $651 at 30k, $641 to $832 at 60k and $568 to $735 at 90k. They exclude tax and don't account for location. Mike Shaw Subaru's fuller 60k service starts at $464.95.

Then there's the upsell. Torque News reported a 2024 RAV4 owner quoted $2,038.98 for a 30,000-mile service with 20 line items. The manual's list is about five. The article's author estimated the factory-required work at $200 to $350.

Independent shops can beat dealers on labor. But a dealer coupon at $210 to $265 for a Toyota 30k beats RepairPal's estimate, so check both. Our guide on how to get a car repair quote covers what to ask for in writing. For general service pricing, see how much a car service costs.

The timing belt question

If your engine has a timing belt, it's the biggest bill on the whole schedule. Plan for it rather than letting it surprise you.

The interval has stretched over the years. Underhood Service says 60,000 miles was the industry standard for many years, and Honda later moved to 90,000 and 105,000 miles. The same source says to replace the water pump with the belt. Its author calls it a "bad bet" to expect the pump to last 180,000 miles.

RepairPal estimates a timing belt replacement at $918 to $1,338, most of it labor. Many engines use a timing chain instead. The 2025 Camry's schedule, for example, lists no timing belt job at all. Your owner's manual will say which you have.

What you can skip

You can skip anything not in your owner's manual for that mileage. Torque News flagged these items on the $2,038.98 RAV4 quote as unnecessary under normal driving:

  • Fuel system, ethanol and EFI cleaner additives
  • Engine oil and coolant conditioners
  • Throttle body and mass airflow sensor cleaning
  • Engine crankcase cleaning
  • CVT and differential fluid exchanges at 30k
  • A/C refresher kits and battery anti-corrosion pads

The same article says the RAV4's transmission and differential fluids are only due at 60,000 or 90,000 miles. That's under severe conditions, like heavy towing or dusty roads.

Don't skip brake fluid on cars that call for it. Honda's 2016 Civic manual, cited by Jalopnik, says to change it every three years.

How to book it without overpaying

  1. Look up your car's schedule in the owner's manual or maintenance guide. Note normal and severe-use items.
  2. Ask the shop for the service as a line-item quote, not a package name.
  3. Strike anything not on the manufacturer's list for that mileage.
  4. Check dealer coupons. Spartanburg Toyota, for one, posted $100 off its 30k package and $200 off its 60k package.
  5. If your engine has a timing belt, budget for it before 90k and do the water pump at the same time.

Oil change timing can also shift your schedule. Our piece on 5,000 vs 10,000 mile oil changes explains when the six-month rule applies.

Common questions

Is a 30,000-mile service necessary?

The items in your manual are, especially if the car is under warranty. The extras dealers bundle in usually aren't. On a Toyota, the 30k list is oil, rotation, two air filters and inspections.

Why is the 60k service more expensive?

Some makes add spark plugs, coolant, brake fluid and differential fluid at 60k, as Subaru does. RepairPal's 60k estimate of $641 to $832 is the highest of the three intervals.

Does a 90k service include a timing belt?

Not automatically. It's a separate job priced at $918 to $1,338 by RepairPal, and only engines with a belt need it.

Can an independent shop do my 30k service without voiding the warranty?

Yes. The FTC says it's illegal to deny warranty coverage simply because someone other than the dealer did the work. Keep every receipt, since records prove the car was properly maintained.
