How we picked

Every tire here was listed in both MK8 sizes at Tire Rack on October 14, 2026. All are Max Performance or Ultra High Performance Summer tires, rated 92Y XL in 225/40R18 and 91Y XL in 235/35R19. We noted each one's UTQG grade, treadwear warranty and price, and used Tire Rack's 2025 summer test for performance.

We left out 200-treadwear track tires and anything listed only in one of the two sizes.

Prices are Tire Rack's, per tire, October 14, 2026, before rebates and fitting. Test scores are out of 10, from 11 tires in Tire Rack's 2025 test. The 18-inch S005 was a 2023-built closeout, and the 19-inch S005 at that price is the BMW star-marked version.

Set prices are four times the per-tire price. For the Continental that's 4 x $212.99 = $851.96 on 18s and 4 x $270.99 = $1,083.96 on 19s.

Bar chart of set-of-four prices at Tire Rack, October 2026. 225/40R18: Kumho Ecsta Sport S $644.80, Falken FK510 $776.00, Continental ECS 02 $851.96, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 $859.96, Bridgestone S005 $931.56, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S $983.96. 235/35R19: Kumho $886.08, Falken $988.00, Bridgestone $1,005.12, Goodyear $1,079.96, Continental $1,083.96, Michelin $1,235.96
The Kumho set costs $339 to $350 less than the Michelin set.

Rebates move the order a little. Michelin had an $80 Visa Reward Card on a set of four, valid September 3 to November 30, 2026, and Goodyear had an $80 instant rebate on four. Bridgestone had an $80 prepaid card on the 19-inch S005, valid October 1 to 31, 2026.

The S and SE use 225/40R18. The Autobahn uses 235/35R19, and so does every 2024 GTI 380. That holds for every US model year from 2022 to 2026.

Sizes are from TireSize.com's year pages. The 380 was a 2024-only edition marking the end of the manual gearbox, sold as a 380 S, 380 SE and 380 Autobahn. All three came on "19-inch gloss black multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels" with summer tires (KBB), so a 380 S or SE is on 19s, not 18s.

Diagram of MK8 GTI factory tire sizes: S and SE, 2022 to 2026, on 225/40R18; Autobahn 2022 to 2026 and every 2024 380 (380 S, SE and Autobahn) on 235/35R19; the 2025 MK8.5 kept both sizes; every pick is 92Y XL in 225/40R18 and 91Y XL in 235/35R19
Two sizes cover every US MK8 GTI.

The 2025 refresh, often called the MK8.5, kept both sizes. The changes were elsewhere. The manual gearbox was dropped, a 12.9-inch screen became standard, and the Autobahn got new 19-inch wheels (Capital One Auto Navigator). Power stayed at 241 hp.

What the MK8 comes with from the factory

By the sources we found, the 18-inch cars come on all-seasons and the Autobahn and 380 on summer tires. Car and Driver's long-term 2022 GTI S came on Pirelli P Zero All Season tires. It said summer tires "cannot be added as a stand-alone option" (Car and Driver via Yahoo Autos). A 2025 trim guide says the SE has "18-inch alloys with all-season tires" and the Autobahn "19-inch wheels with summer performance tires" (TractionLife).

We couldn't find VW naming the Autobahn's factory tire. Two owner reviews on Tire-Reviews say the original 19s were Bridgestones, one naming the "original Bridgestone S005s." Read your own sidewall.

So an 18-inch S or SE owner switching to summer tires is making a real upgrade, not a like-for-like swap. Plan for winter before you do it.

Best summer tire for a MK8 GTI: Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02

The ExtremeContact Sport 02 has the best all-round test record and the highest treadwear grade here, 340. In Tire Rack's 2025 test it set the fastest dry lap and the shortest wet stop. Tire Rack called it "a category benchmark for good reason." It has a 6-year, 30,000-mile treadwear warranty.

The drawback: it scored 3rd overall, behind the Kumho and Goodyear. And Tire Rack tagged the 18-inch price "Special/Closeout," so that $212.99 may not last. Our Pilot Sport 4S vs ExtremeContact Sport 02 comparison has the full numbers.

Best value: Kumho Ecsta Sport S

The Ecsta Sport S won Tire Rack's 2025 test with 7.95 out of 10, and it's the lowest-priced tire here in both sizes. Tire Rack called it "a new category champion" and said noise "was little concern on most surfaces." It still carries a 30,000-mile warranty.

The drawback is its UTQG treadwear grade, 260 against 340 for the Continental. It also stopped 0.8 m longer in the wet and 1.1 m longer in the dry than the Continental.

Also good: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 placed 2nd and had the shortest dry stop in the test, 30.9 m. Its drawback is that it has no treadwear warranty. The $80 instant rebate makes it $779.96 a set on 18s.

The Pilot Sport 4S is the tire most owners have heard of, and it has the same 30,000-mile warranty as the Continental. But it's the highest-priced set here before rebates, and it placed 5th. Tire Rack called it "an aging category icon," and its wet stop was 4.3 m (about 14 ft) longer than the Continental's.

For comfort: Falken Azenis FK510

The FK510 is here for its ride and its wet braking. Tire Rack described "a comfort-oriented ride," and its 40.3 m wet stop was second only to the Continental. It's a lower-priced set than the Continental in both sizes.

The drawbacks: no treadwear warranty, a lower 7.15 score, and road noise that "often produced multiple tones."

Like for like: Bridgestone Potenza S005

Buy the S005 only if you're replacing two damaged tires and want to match the pair still on the car. Tire Rack sells it in both MK8 sizes, but it has no treadwear warranty and the lowest grade here, 240 A A. It wasn't in the 2025 test.

Check the listing before you order. The 18-inch tire at $232.89 was a 2023-built closeout. The 19-inch one at $251.28 is BMW star-marked, and a second 19-inch version was listed at $322.57.

What the 2025 test shows

The Continental, Kumho and Goodyear finished within 0.16 points of each other. The Michelin and Falken were further back.

Scores are from Tire Rack, published July 22, 2025. Measured figures are Tire Rack's data as compiled by Tyre Reviews. Braking is from 60 mph. Shorter and faster are better.

The test car was a BMW M2 on 275/35R19, not a GTI. A rear-drive car on wide tires won't rank them exactly as a front-drive hatch on 225s would. Treat it as the best evidence available, not a GTI result.

Bar chart of wet braking from 60 mph in Tire Rack's 2025 test on a BMW M2: Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 39.6 m (130 ft), Falken FK510 40.3 m (132 ft), Kumho Ecsta Sport S 40.4 m (133 ft), Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 40.8 m (134 ft), Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 43.9 m (144 ft)
Four picks stop within 1.2 m of each other in the wet.

Going wider

You can go one width up, with care. APEX pairs 235/40R18 with an 18x8.5 ET43 wheel, and 245/35R19 with a 19x9 ET42 wheel. It says its widest sizes, such as 265/35-18 and 255/30-19, and more aggressive compounds may need a "fender screw mod" to stop rubbing.

Those are for aftermarket wheels. We couldn't confirm the width of the factory MK8 wheels, so don't assume a wider tire suits them. A 235/40R18 is about 25.4 inches tall against 25.1 for the factory 225/40R18, a 1.3% change. Check yours with the tire size calculator and the wheel offset calculator.

Summer tires in the cold

Summer tires need a winter plan. Below about 45°F they lose grip, and they aren't meant for freezing roads. Our Pilot Sport 4S vs Pilot Sport All Season 4 guide explains the temperature rule, and can you run winter tires year round covers the second set.

If you want one set all year, buy an all-season instead. The Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus was $168.99 in 225/40ZR18 and $256.99 in 235/35ZR19 at Tire Rack on October 14, 2026. Our Pilot Sport All Season 4 vs DWS06 Plus comparison helps you choose between the two best-known options.

How to check this on your own car

The site hasn't tested these tires on a GTI. Here's what to check on yours:

  • Photograph the door-jamb placard. It shows the size, load index and pressures for your trim.
  • Photograph one sidewall. Note the brand, model and full code, such as 235/35R19 91Y XL, and whether it says "M+S."
  • Read the DOT date code (how to read it).
  • Measure tread depth at all four corners with a gauge and write it down with the mileage.

What to do today

  1. Read your placard: 225/40R18 or 235/35R19.
  2. Decide if the car sits out the winter. If not, price a winter set or an all-season.
  3. Pick from the table: ExtremeContact Sport 02 for the best all-rounder, Ecsta Sport S to spend less.
  4. Match or beat the load index on your placard. Every pick here is 92 on 18s and 91 on 19s.
  5. Price all four from one store, apply any rebate, and get an alignment after fitting.

Common questions

Does the MK8 Autobahn come with summer tires?

Yes, by every source we found. A 2025 trim guide says the Autobahn has "19-inch wheels with summer performance tires," and an owner review names the original tires as Bridgestone S005s. The 18-inch S and SE come on all-seasons; the 2024 380 versions of all three trims came on 19s with summer tires.

Can I fit 235/40R18 on a stock MK8?

We can't confirm it. APEX recommends 235/40R18 on its own 18x8.5 ET43 wheel, but we couldn't find the factory wheel width. Ask the tire store to check the size against your wheel's width before you order.

Pilot Sport 4S or ExtremeContact Sport 02 for a MK8?

The ExtremeContact Sport 02. It scored higher in Tire Rack's 2025 test, stopped 4.3 m shorter in the wet and costs $33 to $38 less per tire in MK8 sizes. Buy the 4S only if you want to match two you already have.
