Tokyo Auto Salon 2019

The tuner event calendar: Tokyo Auto Salon, SEMA, Luftgekühlt, Wekfest and more

Short answer

The modified car year opens with Tokyo Auto Salon in January, runs through summer shows like Wekfest, Gatebil and Goodwood, and closes with Luftgekühlt in October, SEMA in early November and the Essen Motor Show into December. This guide gives dates, cities, crowd sizes and what each event is known for, so you can pick the ones worth travelling to.

Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 drew 272,383 people to Makuhari Messe over three days in January, with 856 cars on display (Tokyo Auto Salon). That's the opening bell of the modified car year.

This is a month-by-month guide to the big shows in tuner and enthusiast culture: when they run, how big they are, who they're for and how to get in.

The calendar at a glance

The year has two peaks. January belongs to Tokyo. October through early December belongs to Luftgekühlt, SEMA and Essen. Summer is packed with outdoor festivals in between.

Figures come from each event's own release or the reports linked in the sections below.

January: Tokyo Auto Salon

Tokyo Auto Salon is the biggest tuner show on the calendar, and it opens the year. It started in 1983 as the Tokyo Exciting Car Show and took its current name in 1987 (Wikipedia). It has been at Makuhari Messe in Chiba since 1999.

The scale is huge. The 2026 show filled exhibition halls 1 to 11 plus an outdoor arena, with 389 exhibitors and 4,315 booth units (Tokyo Auto Salon). Saturday alone pulled 105,034 people. The record is 330,666 visitors in 2019 (Wikipedia).

What you see is the Japanese aftermarket's new season. Wheel makers, aero brands and tuning houses unveil their builds, and the factories bring their own concepts. It's where shops like Wald and Bee Dragon have shown VIP sedans (Speedhunters).

Friday is a business day for media and industry until 2 p.m., so the public gets in from Friday afternoon with a premium ticket, or on the weekend. The 2027 edition runs January 15 to 17.

Spring: Luft in Asia and California

Luftgekühlt is the air-cooled Porsche event that started as a parking lot meet and turned into a touring show. Le Mans winner Patrick Long and creative director Howie Idelson started it in 2014 at Deus Ex Machina in Venice, California (Classic Driver).

The first one drew several hundred people, more than the venue could hold (Hagerty). By Luft IV, Porsches filled the surrounding blocks and Rod Emory used it to debut his first all-wheel-drive 356.

It travels now. Luft has run in Indianapolis, San Francisco, Britain, Germany, Poland and Denmark, and spent several years on the Universal Studios backlot (Classic Driver). In early 2026, Luft Tokyo put 220 cars on the KK Line Expressway and drew over 11,600 people (The Shop).

Long's team also runs Air and Water, which held its fourth edition in Costa Mesa on April 25, 2026. It mixes a live Porsche auction, a Broad Arrow single-marque sale and more than 50 Porsche vendors.

Summer: Wekfest, Gatebil and Goodwood

Summer is the busy season for outdoor and judged shows. These three are very different.

Wekfest

Wekfest is the judged custom show for JDM, luxury and import builds. It started in San Francisco in 2008 and screens its cars strictly, judging originality and execution rather than money spent (ClubLexus). Its Los Angeles show put about 450 vehicles on the floor.

The series moves around. The official site's latest schedule lists Chicago in March, Port Messe Nagoya in Japan in May, Seattle in June, San Jose in July and Miami in December (Wekfest USA). San Jose, billed as "The Main Event," is the one to aim for, with about 500 exhibitors (Global Trade Fairs). Check the site for exact dates; listings disagree.

Gatebil

Gatebil is Scandinavia's big driving festival, and you go to watch cars on track, not on stands. The 2026 main festival at Rudskogen Motorsenter ran July 2 to 5, about an hour from Oslo, with 40,000 visitors expected (Gatebil).

The program is drifting, time attack and open track sessions. The Gatebil Extreme series has run since 2005, and time attack drivers get 45-minute sessions with their best lap setting the grid for the Extreme Race. There's camping, music and taxi rides in yellow BMW M5s.

Goodwood Festival of Speed

Goodwood is a broader show, but tuners and builders use it for debuts. The 2026 festival ran July 9 to 12 on the Goodwood hill in West Sussex, and 2025 tickets sold out fast (Goodwood). The Ford Supertruck won the 2025 Timed Shoot-Out.

October: Luftgekühlt main event

Luft 12 is on Saturday, October 10, 2026, in Atlanta, near Porsche Cars North America's headquarters (The Shop). Venue and tickets were still to be announced at the time of writing.

Luft 11 in Durham, North Carolina, was the first East Coast gathering, and The Shop reported over 9,000 guests. The draw is the setting as much as the cars. Each show picks an unusual venue and arranges the Porsches like an exhibition.

November: SEMA

SEMA is the aftermarket industry's trade show, and the place where the year's biggest builds debut. The 2026 show runs November 3 to 6 at the Las Vegas Convention Center (Exhibit City News).

The numbers are the largest on this list. The 2025 show drew 131,942 attendees from 140 countries and 2,283 exhibitors. The 2026 show uses about 1.1 million square feet indoors and roughly 1 million outdoors.

The catch is access. SEMA is closed to the general public; you need to register as media, a manufacturer, a buyer or an exhibitor (Wikipedia). The public option is SEMA Fest on Friday, November 6, which pairs motorsport demos with live music on the show campus.

It has history too. The first show ran in 1967 with 98 manufacturers and about 3,000 attendees, and it moved from Anaheim to Las Vegas in 1977. It was cancelled for the first time in 2020.

Late November to December: Essen Motor Show

Essen closes the European year and is Germany's best-attended annual car fair. The 2026 show runs November 28 to December 6 at Messe Essen, with a preview day on November 27 (Essen Motor Show).

Tuning is the heart of it. Halls 5 to 7 are Tuning and Lifestyle, with brands like Capristo, Eventuri, Milltek Sport and Borbet. Around 500 exhibitors attend, and a day ticket costs 20 euros online. New for 2026, Messe Essen runs the classic car halls itself and adds a car market.

Where to start

  1. Pick one anchor show a year. For Japanese tuning, that's Tokyo Auto Salon; for US builds, SEMA Fest or Wekfest San Jose; for Porsches, Luftgekühlt.
  2. Book Tokyo Auto Salon flights and Chiba hotels by autumn. The show sits two weeks after New Year, and the weekend is the busiest.
  3. If you're in the trade, register for SEMA early. If not, plan around SEMA Fest on the Friday.
  4. Combine trips. Goodwood and Gatebil fall in the same July fortnight, and Essen opens three weeks after SEMA closes.
  5. Confirm dates on each organizer's site before booking. Event listings on third-party sites often carry old or wrong dates.
