Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk7 2017

Is OBDeleven worth it in 2026?

Short answer

Yes, if you own a pre-2024 VW, Audi, SEAT or Skoda and want to code it from your phone. Over three years the PRO route costs about €248 at OBDeleven's own prices (about $262 at US list prices), close to VCDS and Carly. Skip it for coding if your car is a 2024-on model with SFD2, which OBDeleven can't code yet.

Yes, if you own a VW, Audi, SEAT or Skoda built before 2024 and want to code it from your phone. No, if your car is a 2024-on model with SFD2 security, or if all you want is to read a check engine light.

Price isn't the deciding factor. Over three years OBDeleven, Carly and VCDS land within about $130 of each other for one car. What you're really choosing is how you pay, how deep you can go, and whether your car can be coded at all.

What you get free, and what costs extra

The device alone reads codes and live data with no plan. Coding is where you start paying.

OBDeleven says "Diagnostics and live data are available with the FREE plan" (OBDeleven). Live data means sensor readings while the engine runs. That's enough to chase a fault, but it won't change a single setting.

There are two paid routes. Credits pay for One-Click Apps, OBDeleven's ready-made tweaks such as a needle sweep or a seatbelt chime change. Plans cover the rest.

PRO adds manual coding, adaptations, control unit backups and freeze frame data on VW Group cars, but it "doesn't include access to our pre-coded customizations" (OBDeleven support). ULTIMATE adds "nearly unlimited" One-Click Apps for every licensed brand: VW Group, BMW, Toyota, Mercedes and US-built Fords (OBDeleven).

OBDeleven's store showed only euro prices on 14 October 2026 (OBDeleven). The US and UK store pages didn't load for us, so the US figures below are retailer list prices.

UroTuning had the device on sale at $89.99, the PRO pack at $143.99 and the ULTIMATE pack at $269.99 the day we checked. OBDeleven's 2025 price change also announced 24 and 36-month plans with bigger discounts (OBDeleven blog, 29 July 2025). The store didn't list them in October 2026.

Three-year cost for three kinds of buyer

Most VW owners who code should buy the PRO pack. It costs about €248 over three years, against €115 for a one-off credits buyer and €602 for ULTIMATE.

The maths uses OBDeleven's renewal rule. A plan "renews when its full activated period ends, for one year at the regular plan price with a 10% discount" (OBDeleven support). That makes a PRO renewal €53.99 and an ULTIMATE renewal €170.99 (OBDeleven support). One catch: plans bundled with a device don't switch on auto-renewal, so turn it on in your profile or you'll pay full price.

PRO is the best value for one car you keep coding. ULTIMATE costs 2.4 times as much.

How far do 200 Credits go? It depends on the apps. OBDeleven's own example is "10 credits" for one app (OBDeleven support), and unused Credits can be refunded within 30 days. Prices vary by app, so check the ones you want in the free app before you buy.

OBDeleven vs Carly and VCDS

On one VW or Audi in the US, three years of coding costs $199 to $330 whichever tool you pick. OBDeleven PRO sits in the middle at $262.41.

That US figure is the $159.99 PRO pack plus two $51.21 plan codes. VCDS from Ross-Tech is a one-off $199 for a cable that works on 3 cars, or $299 for 10 (Ross-Tech). Carly's US pricing page lists an Audi licence at $75.89 a year and All Brands at $109.88 a year, with the scanner included (Carly). It doesn't list a VW price. In the US App Store, the "Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda" licence is $53.99 a year, with the scanner bought separately (App Store).

The UK Carly figures are three years of the Audi licence at £59.89 and All Brands at £86.89, scanner included (Carly UK). Carly's licences renew automatically and drop back to basic code reading if you cancel.

Bar chart of three-year cost to code one VW or Audi in US dollars: VCDS HEX-V2 3 cars $199, Carly Audi licence $227.67, OBDeleven 3 PRO pack plus two renewals $262.41, VCDS HEX-V2 10 cars $299, Carly All Brands $329.64
The spread is about $130. Features decide it, not price.

So, OBDeleven vs Carly? For coding a VW or Audi, OBDeleven. OBDeleven's comparison page says Carly "does not support advanced features such as SFD unlock, manual coding, or adaptations" (OBDeleven). OBDeleven wrote that page, so treat it as a rival's claim. The same table admits OBDeleven has no repair-cost estimates. Carly also bundles used-car checks and battery health checks, and its scanner carries a lifetime warranty.

VCDS is the better buy if you have a Windows laptop, follow written coding guides, or plan to keep the tool for years with nothing to renew. Our OBDeleven vs VCDS comparison goes through that choice in detail.

The 2024+ problem: SFD2

If your car is a 2024 or newer VW Group model with SFD2, OBDeleven can't code it. Its product pages said so on 14 October 2026: "2024+ Volkswagen Group vehicles with the latest security system (SFD2) are currently not supported" (OBDeleven).

SFD2 is a second layer of VW's diagnostic lock that "blocks coding and adaptations," and OBDeleven's explainer of 6 February 2026 says any future support "will depend on Volkswagen Group authorization and technical feasibility" (OBDeleven). It gives no timeline. The older SFD lock, from about 2020 on, is a different thing. PRO and ULTIMATE clear that one automatically by requesting a token from VW's servers (OBDeleven).

OBDeleven's own list goes by production date, not model year. It includes the Golf 8 from April 2024, the ID.4 from January 2024 and the Audi Q7 and Q8 (4M) from August 2023, and OBDeleven says the list "is not final" (OBDeleven). A February 2024 forum list adds the new Tiguan, Passat B9 and ID.7 (SEATCupra.net). OBDeleven also warns that "some features may be limited on 2024+ BMW models" (OBDeleven).

What owners complain about

Owners rarely question whether it works. They complain about paying again and again.

On Audizine's "worth it" thread most replies say yes, mainly for one-tap coding such as auto headlights and seat heat levels. One poster, oesman, put the main objection plainly: "Just feels like you'll always be paying for something" (Audizine). PRO doesn't include One-Click Apps, so PRO owners still buy Credits for those. ULTIMATE's "unlimited" apps fall under a fair use policy (OBDeleven blog). The support page marks them with an asterisk it doesn't explain. Early buyers with the old Lifetime PRO VAG plan keep it only in the older VAG app, and it doesn't carry over to other brands.

How to check this on your own car

Do these checks with the device on the FREE plan before you pay for anything.

  • Open Gateway 19, then About, and read the ODX name. OBDeleven support says SFD2 units end in "UNECE" (SEATCupra.net). Screenshot it.
  • Photograph the build date on the door-jamb sticker. OBDeleven's SFD2 list goes by production date, and some Audis are on it from August 2023.
  • List the One-Click Apps you want and note each Credit price in the app. Add them up before choosing Credits or a plan.
  • After buying a plan, screenshot the plan screen with its end date, and check whether auto-renewal is on.

Who it's worth it for

Decision flow: 2024+ VW Group car with SFD2 means diagnostics only; otherwise read codes with the FREE plan €84.99, a few tweaks with device plus 200 Credits €114.99, one VW Group car on the PRO pack €139.99 then €53.99 a year or VCDS, several brands on ULTIMATE €259.99 then €170.99 a year
Check for SFD2 first, then pick by what you want to change.
  • A few tweaks, once: device + 200 Credits. No plan to renew.
  • One VW or Audi you keep fiddling with: the PRO pack. Our popular MK7 GTI coding changes show what people change first.
  • A VW and a BMW or Toyota in the same garage: ULTIMATE. If the BMW is the main car, compare BimmerCode vs BimmerLink first.
  • Codes and live data only: the free plan, or any decent scanner from our best OBD2 scanners for home use.

What to do today

  1. Check your build date. If the car was built in late 2023 or later, read the Gateway 19 ODX name before buying a plan.
  2. Download the free app and price the One-Click Apps you want in Credits.
  3. If you'll keep coding one VW Group car, buy the PRO pack and switch on auto-renewal for the 10% discount.
  4. If you have a Windows laptop and want manual coding with nothing to renew, price VCDS instead.
  5. Before any change, back up the module coding and write down what you changed.

Common questions

Does OBDeleven need a subscription?

Not for diagnostics and live data, which are free with the device. Manual coding on VW Group cars needs PRO or ULTIMATE, and One-Click Apps need Credits or ULTIMATE. Learn what the free readings mean in how to read live data with a cheap OBD2 scanner.

Can OBDeleven code my 2024+ Tiguan?

Not if its modules use SFD2, and a forum list of SFD2 cars includes the 2024 Tiguan. OBDeleven lists 2024+ VW Group cars with SFD2 as not supported and gives no date for a fix.

Is OBDeleven better than Carly for VW?

For coding, yes. OBDeleven does manual coding and clears the older SFD lock, while its own comparison says Carly does neither. Carly adds repair-cost estimates, used-car checks and battery checks.
