quart of oil

Best 5W-20 synthetic oil

Short answer

Mobil 1 5W-20 is the safe pick for most Fords, Hondas and Chryslers that call for the grade: API SQ, ILSAC GF-7A, the Ford and Chrysler specs on the label, and about $32 for 5 quarts at Walmart. Pennzoil Platinum is the budget choice at under $7 a quart, and Castrol Edge Extended Performance is the one to buy if you run long drain intervals.

Mobil 1 5W-20 is the one to buy if your manual says 5W-20 and you want no arguments at the dealer. It carries API SQ, ILSAC GF-7A, five Ford WSS specs and Chrysler MS-6395 (Mobil's data sheet), and Walmart lists the 5-quart jug at $31.97. If you'd rather spend less, Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 was $6.88 a quart at Blain's Farm & Fleet when I looked.

5W-20 is the factory grade for most Fords from the early 2000s on, a lot of Hondas and Acuras, and Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram engines built to MS-6395. The spec on the back of the bottle matters more than the brand on the front.

How these were picked

Three things decided the list. The oil has to carry the current API SP or SQ rating with ILSAC GF-6A or GF-7A, because those add the low-speed pre-ignition protection that turbo direct-injection engines need. It has to list at least one of Ford WSS-M2C960-A1 (or the newer 970-A1) and Chrysler MS-6395 on the maker's sheet. And it has to be in stock at a normal store.

Excluded: synthetic blends sold as "synthetic" on the shelf, boutique racing oils without API licensing, and anything whose maker page I couldn't open to confirm the specs.

Prices were opened in October 2026. The Pennzoil row shows what the retailer printed; Pennzoil's current bottles carry SP and GF-6A, so read the label in the store.

Mobil 1 5W-20

Mobil 1 is on the list because its spec sheet is the most complete of the group. API SQ and GF-7A are the newest ratings, and the 5W-20 page lists Ford WSS-M2C970-A1, which is Ford's current spec, alongside Chrysler MS-6395. Typical numbers are 8.2 cSt at 100°C, a -39°C pour point and a 243°C flash point. Mobil backs it with a 15,000-mile or one-year guarantee.

On BITOG it's the default answer in 5W-20 threads, mostly because Walmart stocks the 5-quart jug everywhere and it has been as low as $19.99 on sale (Slickdeals, April 2024). One Fusion owner reported two Duratec engines clean inside at 10,000-mile intervals.

Drawback: the 5W-20 is not dexos1 licensed (that's the 5W-30 only), and one BITOG owner found it noisier and used more in an Acura than other brands. Mobil 1 5W-20 on Amazon

Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20

Pennzoil Platinum is the price pick. Blain's lists the quart at $6.88, which is less than half the Amsoil quart, and the 5-quart jug is usually cheaper still. Pennzoil's claim is piston cleanliness beyond the industry standard, built on its gas-to-liquid base oil. Blain's lists a -48°C pour point and a 401°F flash point.

The drawback is the paperwork. The retailer page I opened still shows API SN-RC and GF-5, and Pennzoil's own product page wouldn't load the spec table. Current bottles are labeled SP and GF-6A, but check the circle on the back before buying from old stock. Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 on Amazon

Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-20

Valvoline earns its place by publishing the numbers most brands hide. The data sheet shows 8.0 cSt at 100°C, a viscosity index of 156, HTHS of 2.6 cP, Noack under 15 percent, and zinc at 760 ppm with phosphorus at 660 ppm. It's licensed API SP and GF-6A and lists Ford WSS-M2C960-A1 and Chrysler MS-6395.

The drawback is a 2021-dated sheet, so it hasn't been updated to SQ and GF-7A yet, and there's no mileage guarantee. If your car is a 2025 or newer Ford that asks for 970-A1, Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge EP fit better. Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-20 on Amazon

Castrol Edge 5W-20 and Edge Extended Performance

Castrol gets two entries because the two products are priced close and aimed at different drivers. Standard Edge is rated for 20,000 miles or one year on the O'Reilly listing, meets Ford WSS-M2C945-B1 and 960-A1 and Chrysler MS-6395, and Castrol claims ten times better high-stress performance in the Sequence IX test against API SP limits.

Extended Performance is the newer formula: API SQ, GF-7, dexos1 Gen 3 and ACEA C5 on the Walmart listing, with a 25,000-mile claim and a $33.97 price for 5 quarts. That's $2 more than Mobil 1 for the only dexos1-licensed 5W-20 in this group.

Drawback: the mileage claims are Castrol's, and no Ford, Honda or Chrysler manual allows 20,000 or 25,000 miles. Follow the oil life monitor, not the jug. Castrol Edge 5W-20 on Amazon

Amsoil Signature Series 5W-20

Amsoil is here for the owner who wants the longest drain and doesn't mind paying for it. Amsoil's page claims 4 times more LSPI piston protection after 25,000 miles, 72 percent more deposit protection than Sequence IIIH requires, and zero oil screen plugging in a 125,000-mile Ford F-150 Raptor study. Read the footnotes though: several of those tests used the 5W-30 or 0W-20 version, not this grade.

The drawback is cost and availability. The quart is $17.99 retail, it was out of stock on Amsoil's site, and the spec list sits in a data bulletin rather than on the page. BITOG regulars like it but also point out that any oil meeting the Ford spec wears the 5.0 Coyote about the same. Amsoil Signature Series 5W-20 on Amazon

What about Motorcraft

Motorcraft 5W-20 is a synthetic blend, not a full synthetic, so it isn't a pick here, but it's what Ford dealers pour. The data sheet shows API SQ Resource Conserving and GF-7A, Ford WSS-M2C970-A1, 8.3 cSt at 100°C and a pour point under -45°C. CJ Pony Parts lists the quart at $17.99 against a $23.99 MSRP, which is dear for a blend.

A BITOG F-150 thread has an owner's relative at 110,000 miles on Motorcraft blend at roughly 10,000-mile intervals, still quiet.

Check your manual

The grade is printed on the oil fill cap on nearly every Ford, Honda and Chrysler product that uses 5W-20, and in the capacities table at the back of the owner's manual. Ford manuals also print the WSS spec number. If the cap says 5W-20, don't go to 5W-30 on a hunch; if it says 0W-20, 5W-20 is not an upgrade.

What to do before you buy

  1. Read the fill cap and the manual for the grade and the spec number (Ford WSS-M2C960-A1 or 970-A1, Chrysler MS-6395, or the Honda note to use an API-certified oil).
  2. Turn the bottle around and find the API donut. It should say SP or SQ and Resource Conserving. GF-5 stock is old.
  3. Buy the 5-quart jug, not quarts. Every oil here costs 40 to 60 percent less per quart that way.
  4. Pick by use: Mobil 1 for most cars, Pennzoil Platinum if price matters most, Castrol Edge EP or Amsoil if you stretch drains past 10,000 miles on a synthetic-rated oil life monitor.
  5. Keep the receipt and write the mileage on the jug. That's the proof a dealer asks for in a warranty dispute.
